The province of Cáceres is the second largest in Spain, with only the other Extremadura province of Badajoz having more land area. It has a population of around 400,000 people, and is bordered by the provinces of Salamanca and Ávila in Castilla y León in the north, Toledo in Castilla – La Mancha in the east, Badajoz in the south and Portugal in the west. The provincial capital shares the name of the province, Cáceres. The oldest human remains in the area date back 700,000 years.
