Mazcuerras, sometimes called Luzmela, is a town and municipality with a size of around 55 square kilomaters and a population of around 2,100 people.  Before the Romans administered the area, it is believed the blendios, a pre-Roman Cantabrian tribe, lived in the area.  The local ecconomy has traditionally centered around cattle farming and the cultivation of flowers.  More recently, tourism has begun to play a more important economic role.
