Chamberí, officially district number 7, is located north of Centro. Its population of around 138,000 is divided into six barrios, Gaztambide (71), Arapiles (72), Trafalgar (73), Almagro (74), Ríos Rosas (75) and Vallehermoso (76).
The district was created as a result of the Ensanche plan by Carlos María de Castro that was approved in 1860. The first area to be fully urbanized was Almagro, followed by Río Rosas. As a result of the district’s relative age, it is home to many modernist, neo-Gothic and neo – Mudejar buildings.
