Cárcel de Ventas was originally located at Calle del Marqués de Mondéjar, 24. Open from 1930 to 1969, it was one of the three major women’s prison in Francoist Spain. It held those accused of crimes or who challenged the regime’s authorities. Among those imprisoned were lesbians, though the actual total is impossible to determine as the Franco government did not charge suspected lesbians under laws designed to imprison gay men as the state could not conceptualize the existence of female homosexuals. The prison has since been demolished, replaced by a park and a public garden. Among the women imprisoned there was Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo y Maura.

Jardín de las Mujeres de Ventas, located at Calle de Ramón de Aguinaga, is a garden dedicated to the memory of the women imprisoned at Cárcel de Ventas. The Closet Club, originally located at Calle de Jorge Juan, 20, was a gay and lesbian bar that opened around 2016. Occupying a 2 story location, it had live music, a dance hall and was decorated in multi-color lights. It also offered quiet spaces for people to socialize, and enjoy conversation and a cocktail. It had closed by 2021.
