Ana Romero was a winger for the Spanish national women’s football team. She is also one of a handful of out lesbians in Spanish football. She was also one of the few to openly date a teammate, Merel van Dongen, whom she met after joining Ajax de Ámsterdam. Dating a teammate meant being more circumspect in public as a way of managing fan expectations, as people read into on pitch actions as to what was happening privately and vice versa.
