Matute is a municipality with a population of around 90 people, down from its peak of around 820 in 1887.

History

Esteban Manuel de Villegas is a seventeenth century poet. He was born in Matute on 5 February 1589 and died in Nájera on 3 September 1669. He was the first Spanish poet to use Sapphic meters in writing verse, a deviation from the current forms of verse in use at that time. His only Sapphic inspiration appeared to be the style of verse, and not themes around female love.
